History

In 1983 the doors of Adsum House opened to women who had no place to live. At that time, there was a growing need to provide safety and shelter to women living on the street in Halifax (K'jipuktuk).

The Sisters of Charity, Sisters of the Good Shepherd, Christ Anglican Church, Grace United Church and St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Parish worked together toward a goal of providing safe, secure shelter for women.

In the years since the ribbon was cut, we have provided shelter, programs and services to thousands of people. We have grown from one shelter to an organization that provides a range of housing options, programs and services.

Our name was legally changed to Adsum for Women & Children in 2004; we were previously known as the Association for Women’s Residential Facilities.
