Adsum Announces 2012 Successful Canadian Women Honorees

Adsum for Women & Children will honour three extraordinary Canadian women during its 23rd Annual Successful Canadian Women’s Dinner. The event, which will take place at Pier 21 on Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012, celebrates the efforts and achievements of remarkable Canadian women. This year, we will recognize the work of three women who are making a difference in the lives of women, children and youth on an international scale.

We are thrilled to announce that our 2012 honorees are: Mary Coyle, former director of the Coady International Institute; Marnie McBean, a three-time gold medal winning Olympian, speaker, mentor, broadcaster, author and ambassador for Plan Canada’s Because I am a Girl initiative; and, Marilyn McHarg, a founding member and current General Director of the Canadian section of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) / Doctors Without Borders.

Our annual Successful Canadian Women’s Dinner is one of Adsum’s signature fund and awareness raising events.  For more than 20 years, the business and philanthropic communities have supported this important event.  Each year, approximately 350 people attend this celebration of the accomplishments of Canadian women.  During the evening we are also able to draw attention to the needs of women, children and female youth who are homeless or at risk of experiencing homelessness.

Past honorees include Annette Verschuren, Sook-Yin Lee, Anne Murray, June Callwood, Adrienne Clarkson, Mary Walsh, Margaret (Kemper) Trudeau and a number of other notable Canadians.

In the 28 years since Adsum first opened its doors on Brunswick Street in Halifax, N.S. more than 12,000 women have called us ‘home’.  We’ve grown from a one-facility emergency shelter to an organization that supports women and children from homelessness right through to stable housing through the addition of transitional and supportive housing units. Currently, Adsum’s operations include an emergency shelter, a residential centre with supportive, therapeutic programming and two apartment buildings offering affordable, supportive housing.

“We’re ecstatic to recognize these three outstanding women. Over the years the Successful Canadian Women’s Dinner has celebrated the achievements of many great women doing great things on a very large scale,” says Adsum executive director, Sheri Lecker.  “Each day at Adsum we see women achieve incredible individual successes that demonstrate the importance of our work – from a woman admitting to an addiction or seeking support for a mental health issue, to a young mother signing a lease for her first home and reuniting with her child. Women like Mary Coyle, Marnie McBean, Marilyn McHarg and those staying or living at Adsum can achieve great things with the right support. This event ensures that we can continue to offer the shelter, programs and services needed to allow hundreds of women and children in HRM security, dignity and personal success each and every year.”

Through tickets sales, sponsorship and a silent auction the Successful Canadian Women’s Dinner raises approximately $70,000 each year to directly benefit the women and children we support.
