Successful Canadian Women's Dinner

October 12th, 2011 (Wed 6:00pm)

Honouring Annette Verschuren

"Many things in my life have been based on reverse encouragement.  People say, "You can't do it," and I become very competitive."

Annette Verschuren - Successful Canadian Woman Entrepreneur

Annette Verschuren was born in North Sydney, Cape Breton, just a few years after her parents emigrated to Canada from The Netherlands.  Annette's father started out as a herdsman in Truro, eventually buying a farm in Cape Breton.  The family lived in a very homogenous community, which made it challenging at times.  Growing up, Annette actively helped out on her father's farm.  At the same time, she kept busy running a club out of the chicken coop where as president or treasurer, she became good at handling money (club dues!).  This skill helped Annette to finance her own way through St. Francis Xavier University.  She graduated in 1977 with a degree in business.

After 15 years with Home Depot, Annette stepped down this year as President.  Over the years, and at various companies, Annette gained the reputation as a leader who built amazing teams and who excelled at motivating people.  In her words, "Creating the visions, the alignment of the team, developing the plan with the team, and coaching them and motivating them, is what it is all about.  And be positive - it's infectious.  People are looking for inspiration."

Adsum is honouring Annette at this year's Successful Canadian Women's Dinner  - our 21st annual - as someone who has never let others tell her what she could or could not do.  It is Annette's strength of character and determination that led her to to overcome stereotypes of women's roles in the world of work.
